The Village of Inverness has developed a Storm Water Management Program (SWMP) for the purpose of meeting the minimum standards required by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Phase II program. Federal regulations through the USEPA require that all Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s), partially or fully in urbanized areas based on the 2000 census, obtain storm water permits for their discharges into receiving waters. MS4s include the conveyance or system of conveyances including roads with drainage systems, municipal streets, catch basins, gutters, ditches, swales, manmade channels or storm sewers. Storm water runoff naturally contains numerous constituents; however, urbanization typically increases concentrations to levels that may impact water quality. Pollutants associated with storm water include sediment, nutrients, bacteria and viruses, oil and grease, metals, organics, pesticides, and gross pollutants. The SWMP describes the procedures and practices that can be implemented by Inverness to effectively reduce the discharge of pollutants within storm water runoff and comply with Federal standards.
